Most people believe that an emotion originates from outside themselves.
'I'm overwhelmed because I don't have much money,'
'I'm overwhelmed because I have so much work to do.'
'I'm overwhelmed because the flat above me always makes so much noise.'
'I'm feeling overwhelmed because someone died.'
Due to this belief,
Feeling emotions can be seen as not somehing that happens to us, but something that we literally do ourselves.
Imagine the word 'feel' as a verb in this sentence:
I feel angry.
In the case of having a noisy neighbour,
I hear ambient bumps, etc. while I want silence. I want silence because I want to feel emotion A (joy). Emotion A is what I feel when having creative breakthroughs, which requires focus, which requires silence.
One way to ensure I get silence, and therefore emotion A is by changing the outside world.
I can somehow get the noisy neighbour to produce less noise.
I create emotion B (fear) for the purpose of avoiding interaction with the noisy neighbour (the RAS is focused on avoiding failure) so that I definitely avoid failure, and an even worse situation.
Many emotions can be created for the purpose of motivating myself to interact with the neighbour, and solve the noise problem:
This is arguably the most common emotion that people generate to motivate themselves to change the outside world.
Those who know that emotion is always internally-generated can choose to, 5 minutes before going to meet the neighbour, generate a loving emotion. This ability enables them to see the neighbour not as someone they hate, who they believe to be the cause of their loss of focus, and therefore their loss of creativity, and therefore their loss of money, and therefore their loss of livelihood, but as a just a neighbour, who doesn't realise that their is a noise problem.
They can choose to mention the noise problem not until their fifth interaction, when the foundation for a friendship has been built, because they can choose to generate patience.
. means that they can ensuremeeting them neighbour as a friend, and ask them to keep it down as a friend.
For this I can generate a range of emotions. Most commonly, I would generate emotion B (anger)
by producing I because. I see it as a breach of territory. the emotion of anger is created so that action is taken to change the outside world, which is assumed to be the cause of the emotion B.
