To me, there is clearly unhealthy and healthy guilt. An example of what I'd call healthy guilt = a man hits another man and feels guilty the next day. An example of unhealthy guilt = a man who hit another man still feels guilty about it after 10 years.
I've started this post by writing that it's important to define healthy from unhealthy guilt because it is important for our survival and thrival
In order to become free of unhealthy guilt, we must first make a clear distinction between unhealthy guilt and healthy guilt.
To me, guilt is a function of survival because it seems to be among the many psychological forces whose sole purpose is to bind humans together as a group, so that the species can continue.
Right and wrong
What is right = what supports the survival of the tribe.
What is wrong = what obstructs the survival of the tribe.
Those who do wrong to others in the group must be punished, in order to weed out such behaviour and move the species forward.
